Gravity Roller Conveyor for Truck Unloading: A Practical Solution for Warehouses
Unloading goods from trucks and shipping containers is a regular task for warehouses, distribution centers, and logistics companies. When products are handled manually, workers may need to carry goods repeatedly from the vehicle to the receiving area, making the process physically demanding. A gravity roller conveyor offers a simple solution for suitable unloading applications. Without a powered drive motor, goods move along the inclined roller surface under gravity, helping workers transfer products from a higher position to a lower receiving area. At LL CONVEYOR, we supply customized conveyor equipment for different material handling requirements. In this article, we explore how gravity roller conveyors can support truck unloading operations and what to consider when choosing the right equipment.
What Products Can a Gravity Roller Conveyor Handle?
Gravity roller conveyors can be considered for a variety of goods, provided the products can move safely and reliably across the rollers.
1. Tires and Automotive Products
Tires are one example of a product that may be handled using a suitable gravity roller conveyor. The rollers provide a path for moving tires from a truck or container toward the receiving area.
The conveyor must be designed around tire diameter, width, weight, and contact with the rollers. Roller spacing and side guidance should also be evaluated to help prevent tires from becoming unstable during movement.
See the tire-handling photo below for an example of this application.

2. Cartons and Packages
Cardboard cartons and packaged goods with sufficiently flat and rigid bottoms are common applications for roller conveyors. They can move along the rollers when the conveyor slope and roller configuration are suitable.
3. Selected Boxes and Industrial Products
Certain boxes, rigid packages, and other solid products can also be handled using gravity roller conveyors. Before selecting the equipment, it is important to confirm that the product can bridge the roller gaps and move without getting stuck.
Extendable Gravity Roller Conveyor for Container Unloading
One of the key features of this gravity roller conveyor is its extendable section, which can stretch up to approximately 10 meters inside the shipping container when fully extended.

This design allows the conveyor to reach deep into the container, making it easier for workers to unload goods from the interior toward the container entrance. When the full reach is not required, the extendable section can be retracted for greater flexibility and easier positioning.
The conveyor operates by gravity without a powered drive motor. Goods move down the inclined rollers, making it suitable for products that can travel safely and smoothly on the roller surface.
Depending on the product specifications and conveyor configuration, potential applications include unloading tires, cartons, packages, and other suitable goods.
Key Advantages of a Gravity Roller Conveyor
No powered drive motor required
Products move down the inclined rollers under gravity, so the conveyor does not need a motor to drive the conveying surface.
Simple mechanical structure
With no powered roller drive system, the equipment can offer a straightforward structure for suitable applications.
Practical for downward material transfer
A gravity roller conveyor can connect a higher truck or container floor with a lower receiving area when the site layout and height difference permit.
Suitable for different handling applications
The conveyor dimensions and roller arrangement can be selected according to the products and unloading conditions.
Customized configuration
Conveyor length, working width, height, and other design details can be evaluated according to the customer's requirements.
Actual performance depends on the application, and gravity conveying is not suitable for every product or site condition.
